No matter how big or small your company is, if you’re not thinking like a social business, then you will find yourself behind the times very soon. Forward thinking businesses understand that creating a social business, requires more than just an emphasis on social media or networking; it involves taking a good look at their company culture and infrastructure.
A social business knows that “people do business with people” not companies. They will design an architecture that addresses both their business practices inside and out. Companies need to remove silos and leverage the talents and skills of its employees in coming up with solutions to problems. They need to ensure that effective communication and collaboration are high priorities in their company. Additionally, sales and marketing teams should find themselves evolving into technologists to meet the demands of doing business via social media and social networking. If your sales people are not using LinkedIn for prospecting or networking, then they’re missing opportunities!
I was in the technology sector for over 15 years as a liaison between business and technology departments. I realized quickly that my success was in the ability to bridge the gap between the two functions; specifically sales/marketing and technology groups. Ultimately, it was my relationship skills that supported my success in driving results.
There is a shift going on where sales and marketing teams are forced to collaborate with the technology groups and thus we’ll see more sales/marketing technologists as key role in companies that want to become a social business.
I’m excited at the opportunity to support these companies who are experiencing this social awakening and are ready for and capable of change. It may seem like a volatile time for some, but I see it as an exciting opportunity to change for the better. A great reminder that progress IS perfection.
Companies will only establish genuine, authentic and loyal relationships with customers if they embrace this idea of a social business.
